The Surma, a tribe located in the southwestern part of Ethiopia. This tribe is known as one of the last authentics ones for they have not yet been touched with influences of the modern world.

The Surma is a peacefull natured tribe. However during their yearly traditional stickfightings, "the Donga", they show a very competitive side. "The Donga" is a battle for respect and social status within the tribe itself.
The battle is one of life and death, giving natural selection a leading role.

During my latest visit in 2010 I was invited to 4 Donga's. While remaining on a safe distant, I was able to make intriguing photographs. Unlike the focus I get in my other photographs, during the Donga the people of the Surma are giving me no interest at all. They're complete obtained with the fight, showing me their true nature.
